We walked away slightly confused but nevertheless confident after agreeing with the guys in the shop.

Guess what? The first hole was a Par 4, but neither of us had 4 strokes, I had two given strokes, and my wife had three, I shot a six, my wife had eight - for that hole and for the remainder of that game and for subsequent others we were continually asking our partners what we had, and to make matters worse, we had to know what they scored also so as to mark their cards for the competition.
